Summarize and describe distributions. Summarize numerical data sets in relation to their context, such as by:
a) Reporting the number of observations.
b) Describing the nature of the attribute under investigation, including how it was measured and its units of measurement.
c) Giving quatitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data was gathered.
d) Relating the choice of measures of center and variability to the shape of the data distribution and the context in which the data was gathered.

Objectives
  • Students will summarize numberical data by providing background information about the attribute being measured, methods and unit measurement, the context of data collections activities, the number of observations and summary statistics.
a) Describe a data set by stating what quantity was measured and how it was measured.
b) Describe a data set by stating what quantity was measured and how it was measured.
c) Understand the mean as a fair share and balanced point. Summarize a data set by using mean, median, and mode. Describe overall patterns in data, including clusters, peaks, gaps, and symmetry. Understand mean absolute deviation as a measure of variability from the mean. Summarize a data set by using range, interquartile range, and mean absolute deviation.
d) Determine the effects of outliers on measures of center and variability. Choose appropriate measures of center and variability to describe data, and justify the choice.

The slides have 20 slides that teach and test for working with stem-and-leaf plots as you prepare for the state assessments. Peach-colored slides are for teaching and learning. Light blue-colored slides are for SMART Response questions. There are questions with the highest level of Bloom's Taxonomy included. I use this in a special education class and they can easily do this activity, with assistance.

In this lesson, students get the definition of mean, and represent the mean of a set of data visually.

Students learn the meaning of mean, median, and mode and determine the "average" allowance for their class.

This lesson activity is used as a math center or whole group review of finding the median of a set of numbers or objects.
